Dr. Mantas’ Biography
Dr. Alexander Mantas was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He is the eldest of four children and a second generation Greek-American. His interest in medicine took root as he watched his father practice internal medicine and took form during his education in the sciences.
Alexander’s curiosity for the sciences began while in middle school at The St. Mark’s School of Texas. At the same time he developed a passion for photography and became a successful varsity athlete in both lacrosse and soccer in high school. After graduating in the top of his class and as an honorary member of The Cum Laude Society he made his way with full academic scholarship to Austin College in Sherman, Texas.
At Austin College he continued his athletic interest as player, captain and eventual coach of the NCAA Division III lacrosse team. He received many awards during his college tenure including the Posey Leadership Institute Award for his active role in numerous civic committees and the P.S. Wharton Memorial Fellowship in Chemistry for his role as a teacher’s assistant and tutor. His education culminated with a thesis on the “Unique kinetic characteristics of Z. mobilis decarboxylase” which he presented at the National Conference for Undergraduate Research. After four years Alexander graduated Magna Cum Laude with a double major in biochemistry and mathematics and was admitted into the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa Society.
Following Austin College Alexander was accepted to University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas. After receiving his medical degree Dr. Mantas completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas where he earned the distinguished title of Resident of the Year. During this time he began publishing as a primary author in both medical journals and books. Concurrently, while studying the effects of viral infections on colon cancer and achalasia Dr. Mantas began his career in the field of gastroenterology.
Dr. Mantas remained at Baylor University Medical Center completing a fellowship in gastroenterology under the tutelage of John Fordtran, MD, Lawrence Schiller, MD and Richard Boland, MD. During this time he continued authoring articles in medical journals and books and presented his work at various national gastroenterology conferences. He in addition presented numerous times at the Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine Ground Rounds at Baylor. During his training his endoscopic skills expanded beyond fundamental endoscopy including advanced techniques such as enteroscopy, endoscopic ultrasound and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography.
Dr. Mantas is excited to serve as a member of Digestive Health Associates of Texas and physician staff at Walnut Hill Medical Center and Medical City of Dallas – the very same hospital he was born! He is an active member of the DCMS, TMA, AMA, TSGE, ACG, AGA, ASGE and AASLD and continues to be involved in clinical research. He is currently engaged in the research and development of novel minimally invasive bariatric endoscopic techniques for control of diabetes and weight loss. His joy in teaching others has led him to develop an educational website, The Mantas Manuals, for the training of young doctors and medical students. In addition he looks forward to ultimately becoming a clinical professor for future gastroenterology fellows.
In his practice Dr. Mantas uniquely provides the most comprehensive and up-to-date gastrointestinal care in Texas and is excited to give back to a North Texas community that has nurtured his academic growth. He strongly believes that providing medical care begins with a close doctor-patient relationship built on communication, education and compassion. Only through this relationship is a patient able to return to good health.
Outside of medicine Dr. Mantas has a variety of interests. He recently married the love of his life, Megan, at a beautiful wedding ceremony outside of Houston in June of 2014. In his free time he remains civically active in the North Texas community as member of various volunteer organizations. He and his wife are also active members of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and Christ the King Catholic Church. His athletic interests led him into the world of CrossFit where he is now a CrossFit Level I Trainer and recently competed in the 2014 and 2015 CrossFit Open Games. On weekends he enjoys renovating his nearly century old home and cooking healthy cuisine utilizing herbs and vegetables from his homegrown garden.
